The reason I say this is because just recently I went on a fishing trip for cod. . . It was the best trip that I have had in a long time. and i'll explain that a little later...
But let me start from the beginning Me and two really good friends of mine, Adam and Ben came along with me Cod fishing. . . Like all fishing trips with the boys, they always start the night before, having a few beers and talking about experiences that each one of us have had cod fishing for these mighty terrors. The night was a successful one, preparing, chatting, drinking and just having a good old time. The next morning was really when it started to spark up.
We stumbled out of bed at around 4:45am to catch the incoming tide (hint hint) coz that’s really when cod love to bite. =) So there we all were, driving to one of my favorite destinations. It was a bit of a convenience actually as I just lived around the corner. We took the boat down to a place called Toogoom Creek unloaded everything up and took off to my top secret spot right on the mangroves. . . Cut up and peeled some prawns aka shrimp.
How good am I to these fish! I even peel the prawns for them. Ha ha.
Anyway, as always I was the first one to get all rigged up and get my line in the water. I was using 14lb main line with a 25lb trace about 45cm long. Quite a good looking rig actually!
"My Rod was Going Off!"
Believe it or not in just a matter of minutes before Adam and Ben even got close to getting their line in the water, my rod was going OFF!!! My line was just screaming! I didn’t even have enough time to set my drag! I pulled my rod back and jagged, just so I was convinced that the cod was really hooked on there.
That slowed him down believe me!
While he was swimming back up stream towards the boat, it gave me just enough time to set the drag so he wouldn’t run away as fast as he did the first time. I brought him up to the surface where I got to see his size! This is when I started to get excited!
This Cod Was A Freaken Monster!
The big Cod took one look at the boat and dove straight back down to the ocean floor, must have found its home and I felt the line tighten up! (I still to this day think it was Adam’s suprized face that scared it off!)
The best thing that I learnt off my dad when these sort of situations occur is NOT to fight it just keep the line tight and wait for it to come out of its hole and then start fighting it. The reason being is that most unexperienced anglers are NOT patient and think it is a snag so they pull and pull and pull and eventually snaps, the fish andgets away.
In This Situation Patients Is The Key!
So, Where was I?
Oh yeah so I did what I thought was best and waited for it to come back out of it’s home. After about 15 minutes of Ben and Adam eagerly waiting for it to surface so that they could net it, I put the rod in its rod holder and just sat back watching the tip of the rod to show any movement from down below.
More time passed, and the fish was still in it’s hole. This was when the morning started to get REALLY get interesting!
Adam put the net down and said “Well while we’re waiting guys I recon I could get lucky and catch one for myself!”
I chuckled and said “Go for it mate!” while the clouds started to move over!
The Secret Perfect COD Conditions!
I revealed to Adam a few secrets and out went his line with a live potty mullet on it! If tgere was a cod within miles it would be onto this bait quicker that a fat kid on a lolly pop.
So Adam’s line was in the water, along with my mammoth cod on the end of my rod!
“Ah could you please grab me my rain coat!” I said to Ben pointing to the bow of the boat!
He jumped up grabbed the net and yelled “Matt your line! Your back in business!” But what I found a little strange was as soon as Adam got one big hit, he didn’t hook up! It must have been a Quick bugga of a fish!! What ever it was! By the size of the hit I almost was positive it was another Cod.
Ok so, back to the story, with all it’s energy revived the Cod that was on my line was fighting harder than ever. That’s what I love about cod fishing, it’s always exciting and you can always rely on them to put up a great fight!
That’s why it’s my favorite style of angling.!
So, I tightened the drag up with the intention that it wouldn’t swim back down to its home! Fought it to the surface and Ben netted him! . . . We definitely needed the net it was HUGE!
It was so bif I had to bend it to get it had to fit into the cooler and that is no fisherman’s tale either. :)
The boys congratulated me shook my hand and handed me a rag to wipe my hands. Ben came out and said “Great fight Matt” Adam agreed and said “You know so much about fishing! Especially about catching Cod”. . you should write a book revealing all your secrets."
